4 Common Problems You Encounter Working With Forklifts
Faulty Steering
-Your forklift steering may not be functioning properly due to various reasons. It can be due to low levels of steering fluid transmission which causes the steering wheel not transmitting directional changes fast enough.
Lift or “Mast” Problems
- The mast is not raising, lowering and tilting/shifting properly or quickly enough. The mast can also raise and lower so erroneously causing damage to the carried equipment or goods.
Worn-out Tyres
- Worn-out work tyres will negatively influence your forklift performance making it unsafe to operate.
Electrical systems and starting problem
- Usually when the forklift doesnt start, check the battery if it has adequate charge and is in proper working condition.If the battery isn’t the cause, proceed to check if the machine has sufficient coolant.If both of these isnt the problem, there could be a more serious electrical issue.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU SCHEDULE FORKLIFT MAINTENANCE VISITS ?
These are the timings we recommend you have your forklift maintenance service.
Every 200 hours a full service is recommended. A factory trained technician will:
-Install a new fuel filter
-Grease of chassis and mast components
-Adjust ignition timing and engine idle speed
-Change the oil and install a new oil filter
-Install a new air filter
-Inspect the lift, distributor point, drive belt tension, spark plugs, cap and rotor
Every 600 hours, the hydraulic system should be serviced. A technician will:
-Replace hydraulic oil
-Inspect the lift chain tension, pedal free play, mast operation, carriage rollers, lift and tilt cylinder operation, hand brake, hydraulic oil pump, differential and transmission oil, fuel filter, PCV valve, and hoses.
-Clean the radiator
-Replace the fuel filter
-Replace the hydraulic filter
-Adjust the clutch release bearing, mast support bushing, tilt cylinder pins and chassis links.

How to maintain a forklift gearbox

Here are some useful and informative tips on how to maintain your forklift gearbox ?
1. Make sure to shift the gears properly. Do not shift from reverse to forward right away. Make sure you go to neutral before shifting to forward or reverse.
2. Do not pull or push using the forklift. Forklifts are meant for lifting not pushing or pulling.
3. Make sure gear oil is sufficient. Daily check your gearbox oil.
4. Completely replace your forklift's gearbox oil every 6 months to ensure best performance.
5. Make sure the gearbox and engine mountings are in good condition.
6. Make sure axle and other joints near the gearbox are greased during routine service.
